Pageant winner make donation to Yoker club that helped granny

A KIND-HEARTED pageant winner is today making a donation towards a community centre that helps elderly people with dementia.

Laura MacMillan, 18, from Bearsden, is handing over £250 to the Donald Dewar Day Centre in Yoker as a thank you for the care they have given her grandmother.

Laura is the current Miss Teen Galaxy Scotland and will be competing at the Galaxy International Pageant in Florida USA next year.

The Florida pageant is one of the most prestigious in the beauty industry and one of the top five international pageants to be held in the US.

By being crowned Miss Teen Galaxy Scotland Laura won an all expenses paid trip to the Florida finals to compete against girls from all over the world.

She said: "I competed in galaxy last year and I placed in the top five which I was not expecting at all as it was my very first pageant. After having the most amazing experience and meeting so many new friends, I decided to re compete the following year and I won. I could not believe it and to this day I still can’t quite believe it. It’s honestly a dream come true.”

Multi talented Laura is also a competitive figure skater and qualified dance teacher as well as studying international sports management at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Generous Laura explained her decision to donate the money to the centre.

She said: "My dear gran suffers from dementia so it’s something very close to my heart watching this horrible illness. My gran has been attending a day centre in Yoker called Donald Dewar Day Centre who have been so good to my gran and the elderly. As it is a self-funding club, I feel on this occasion I would love to donate the money I have raised towards this centre as seeing all the work they do with the elderly is just amazing.”
