"No regrets" for Watson as he prepares for Open final bow

OM WATSON insisted he would bow out with no regrets as he prepares to compete in the Open Championship for the final time. The five-time winner admitted he would likely feel quite emotional as he walked down the 18th fairway of the Old Course in St Andrews tomorrow. He came within a whisker of winning the tournament for a sixth time in 2009, when he lost narrowly to Stewart Cink, but as he surveyed a career that has stretched more than 40 years, he says there is nothing he would have done differently.

He said: "Now it's time for my final Open Championship here at St Andrews. This will be it. People have asked me also this week about how am I going to feel. I really don't know how I'm going to feel, although I can start with some of the emotions.

"Is there one thing I would change about my career? I never look at it that way, no. What happens happens. I've got more than my share of lucky bounces because I feel like I'm lucky. I really did. And I've had some bad bounces, but I've had some lucky bounces, too, and I've had more lucky bounces than I've had bad bounces over my career, so I feel grateful to have accomplished what I've accomplished, and I hope that I've entertained people along the way. That's the thing. I hope that they've enjoyed my golf play as I've competed over these last 40 years in The Open Championship.

"I had so many times in my career where I hit a shot that cost me a tournament, but I had so many times in my career where I hit the shot that won me the tournament. So they balanced out. So no, I don't have any regrets on that. It was just kind of the luck of the shot.”

Watson, who revealed he will play his final US Masters next year, hopes he will leave a powerful legacy. "I hope people say that I did the right thing. I hope that people understood how passionate I was for the game, how I gave it 100 per cent, and I don't go blowing my own horn, but I hope that they understand that I've helped some people along the way. That's how I want to be remembered.
