The long-serving gaffer – about to begin his 15th consecutive term in the hotseat – admitted to going through agonies as his players diced with the drop before securing their safety at the expense of derby rivals Benburb.
The neighbours were involved in a tense basement battle which went down to the wire and was settled when defeats in their final league matches against Dunipace and Larkhall consigned the Bens to third-bottom spot, a point worse off than the Ants.
Such a close shave left "Cotter" vowing to avoid a repeat, and he has begun beefing up his squad through the summer.
He revealed: "Our difficulties can be traced back to events that saw six players depart through work commitments last time out and left us working with a core of just 12 guys from Christmas onwards.
"Having to throw in trialists who were out of their depth saw results suffer with confidence taking a dip, and I was fearing the worst right up until Ronnie McDonald netted a 93rd-minute winner in a 2-1 away win over Lesmahagow in one of our closing matches.

"I remember coming away from Craighead Park thinking those three points could save us, however it was still particularly nervy stuff waiting to see if Benburb could then overtake us.
"Thankfully they came up short and we maintained our proud record as the only First Division side never to be relegated, however we simply must look to improve this time out even if that may be easier said than done given the strength and quality of the five new clubs coming into the First Division.
"Neilston and Thorniewood will be looking to go straight back up again, while the promoted trio of Rossvale, Johnstone Burgh and St Roch's are all teams on the rise and will fancy they can emulate what Blantyre Vics achieved last time.â€
Retaining his key players – with the exception of Kieron Maxwell, who has signed for Arthurlie – made for a good start to rebuilding plans and McKenna is also delighted to have snapped up Ross Loughran (Dalry), Paul O’Brien (Postal Amateurs), Mark McQuade (Airdrie AFC) and Chris Barr (Petershill) on top of ex-Newburgh pair James Ross and Craig Houston who came on to his radar after moving down to work in Glasgow.
His hard work is showing signs of paying off, but he has been left disappointed on a number of other signing bids.
He said: "A lot of people in the game reckon St Anthony's are blessed to have such a good catchment area on our doorstep, but that only rings true if you can then get the players on board.
"Unfortunately, it tends to be the case more often than not that players I have earmarked as signing targets are likewise on the shopping lists of other Junior clubs and only last week I was feeling extremely confident about landing four of Harmony Row’s latest crop of promising youngsters only for them to move to Clydebank.
"On top of that, two players who had been looking the part in our pre-season sessions – Paul Gordon and Mark McCarry – decided their futures lay elsewhere.
"Bellshill enticed Paul, while Mark returning to Glencairn was a real kick in the teeth as we had hoped he would forge a partnership alongside Willie Duncan, who did exceptionally well to bag 16 goals in his first season as a Junior last time out.
"Finding a striker to share the scoring burden remains a priority, and hopefully we can unearth someone during our pre-season friendlies which get underway on Saturday when Cumnock come to McKenna Park.â€
Meanwhile, former centre-back Stevie Milligan has replaced Danny Taylor on the coaching team, the former striker having stepped down because of work commitments.
Elsewhere, goalkeeper Ryan Mailey is on the lookout for a new club after featuring as Arthurlie No.1 Mikey White’s understudy for the majority of last season.
Mailey, 21, who hails from East Kilbride and previously turned out for Lanark and Vale of Clyde, can be contacted on 07914 531356.
One-time Celtic defensive prospect Stephen Low has moved from Cumnock to Lesmahagow, while Glencairn manager Willie Harvey has fixed up former player Tony Fraser from Cumbernauld. Friend Link:Beats By Dre Headphones Online

"Is there one thing I would change about my career? I never look at it that way, no. What happens happens. I've got more than my share of lucky bounces because I feel like I'm lucky. I really did. And I've had some bad bounces, but I've had some lucky bounces, too, and I've had more lucky bounces than I've had bad bounces over my career, so I feel grateful to have accomplished what I've accomplished, and I hope that I've entertained people along the way. That's the thing. I hope that they've enjoyed my golf play as I've competed over these last 40 years in The Open Championship.

Watson, who revealed he will play his final US Masters next year, hopes he will leave a powerful legacy. "I hope people say that I did the right thing. Being manager of Rangers can feel like having your head trapped in a vice. As the pressure builds, it becomes ever more difficult to see things in perspective.
It is a predicament which Mark Warburton is almost sure to find himself in somewhere down the line at Ibrox and one which demands the support of wise and trusted lieutenants.
An often lonely road lies ahead for the 52-year-old Englishman. He will need help and sound counsel. In David Weir, though, McLeish believes Warburton has selected an ideal man with whom to ride the rollercoaster that lies ahead.
Weir went through it all as a player during five remarkable years at Rangers, captaining the club to his third league title in the week of his 41st birthday, appearing in a European final and even getting into a grappling match with Gary Caldwell at the end of a typically crazy Old Firm derby at Parkhead.
He has surfed the highs, handled the lows and even lost the plot from time to time. Warburton will draw heavily on that experience of the Glasgow goldfish bowl as the pair bid to rebuild Rangers into a side of Champions League standard.
Serving as the figurehead of Rangers will be quite unlike anything Warburton has experienced before and McLeish admits he is waiting for his Ibrox regime to begin with bated breath.
"There are two kinds of pressure at Rangers,†said the 56-year-old, who won two league championships and five cups in four-and-a-half years as boss. "If Mark gets off to a good start, he will find that it turns from being absolutely vice-like to something you are happier dealing with.
"If you are winning, you have to keep winning every single week and that is the mentality you have to drill into the players every day.

"In those circumstances, you have to keep on top of everything. The backroom staff will be important and Davie, in particular, because he knows what it takes to be a winner there.
"When it is not going so well at a club such as Rangers, though, it can really drain the life out of you. There is no doubt about it. I was certainly a little bit drained at the end of my time as manager.
"We had a decent end to that season and maybe that is because I had already agreed with David Murray that I would be leaving, but the pressure up to then really was like being trapped in a vice. It is all about being able to come through that.
"I received loads of different opinions about how it was going to be before I took the job at Ibrox, but nothing prepares you. You have to go through the experience, you need big cojones and your mentality needs to be right.
"When results are not going your way, you need your backroom team to be honest with you. They can tell you that someone in the team should not be playing or suggest someone who should be.
"You cannot be stubborn. You can’t see everything in that job and, sometimes, you really can’t see the wood for the trees.
"It is why the influence of very close assistants can help so much.
"I know just how exacting it is and Davie will know it from his days as a player.
"I think it will definitely be beneficial to Mark to have Davie there. If Mark had brought someone else in, there may have been more questions about him from people, but having Davie there softens that.â€
Warburton’s reign begins next Tuesday with a home friendly against Burnley, but it is the first competitive match of the season at Easter Road against Hibernian in the Petrofac Training Cup that will see the former Brentford manager’s methods placed firmly under the microscope.
McLeish, like Warburton, is a confident man with some pedigree. He knows, however, that there will be all kinds of doubts going through the Rangers manager’s mind before it all starts for real.
"All kinds of things go through your mind before your first game, all the positives and the negatives,†he said.
"When I took over from Dick Advocaat, I had people telling me I was taking on a poisoned chalice. I felt it was a real challenge and knew how great it would be if I could make things better, but there is a little negative voice in your mind asking what will happen if you don’t win a trophy, don’t win an Old Firm match, don’t win a game at all.
"You don’t want to be a failure at Rangers. People expect you to win just because it is Rangers.
"It is a job that really tests you right to the very edge of your talents and mentality.
"I got off to a good start in my first game and it is very, very important for Mark to sow some seeds and show everyone what is taking shape there.
"It is a great test in that very first game because the expectations that exist at Hibs will have grown as well.â€

Ms Sturgeon gave the Scottish Government’s Greener Together Award to Govanhill Baths Community Trust's Rags to Riches project.
The scheme, based in the First Minister's south side constituency, gives local people masterclasses in 'upcycling' - turning old into new.
Ms Sturgeon said: "I’m delighted to make this award to Rags to Riches.
"It’s a fantastic project and the recognition is well deserved.â€
Rags to Riches works with the local community to improve upcycling skills, providing new skills local people can use to help them find employment.
The project educates the community about the need to recycle what people no longer use and turn it into something they will use.
Now in their third year, the awards celebrate and reward communities for environmental action as part of the national Greener Together campaign, which encourages everyone across the country to play their part in making Scotland a greener and more sustainable nation.
Nadine Gorency, Rags to Riches project manager at Govanhill Baths Community Trust, said: "We’re absolutely delighted to have received the Greener Together Award.

"Govanhill Baths Community Trust's Rags to Riches project has grown to become one of the leading upcycling projects in Glasgow and this award will help raise its profile further afield.
"This award is for the people who have joined us on the journey to develop and nurture sustainability within our communities - the volunteers, tutors and the many participants as well as partners who have supported our work.â€
This year’s judging panel included representatives from the Scottish Government, Zero Waste Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Energy Saving Trust.
The judges highlighted that through their creative and innovative approach, Govanhill Baths has made recycling both fun and useful for local people.
The judges liked the range of approaches, from classes to This Is Not A Fashion Show events to local improvement projects such as using upcycled products to restore a community garden.
It was also noted that the project’s work with local primary schools is also helping it to build a legacy.
Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Richard Lochhead, added: "The Greener Together Awards recognise and reward hard-working communities who are playing their part and helping make Scotland a cleaner, greener place for us all to live.
"There is some truly excellent work being done across Scotland and I’m very pleased to announce the 2015 winners.
"The calibre of entries remains high from across Scotland, and this year we’ve seen really innovative and diverse ways of helping local people to live greener in their areas.
"It’s hugely encouraging to see such passion and commitment across a range of projects.
"Congratulations to all of those who entered this year and to our winners; I can’t wait to see what inspiring and creative initiatives this award uncovers next year.â€

While admissions have risen and fallen over the past three years in the city's hospitals, bed numbers have dropped by as much as 27% in the past three years.
Midwives claim they are facing "extreme pressure" to discharge new mums as soon as possible because of capacity pressures.
One midwife told the Evening Times a mother had recently been discharged at 2am.
In 2012, there were 152 maternity beds at the Southern General and the Princes Royal Maternity Hospital. Additional beds were also provided at the Queen Mum's hospital, which has now closed.
By May 2015, the number of beds available - antenatal and postnatal - had been reduced to 115 - a drop of 24%.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde say a decision was taken five years ago to reduce bed numbers across maternity services because "bed occupancy was low at the time" and patient stay was higher than average.
The board said additional beds are opened if numbers were inadequate for admission numbers.
However, staff say the cuts have left them facing pressure from managers to discharge new mums.
Promoted stories
Figures obtained by Freedom of Information laws show beds at the Princess Royal Maternity have been reduced from 80 in January 2012 to 58 in May 2015 - a 27% drop.
Staff said the problem has been compounded by a decision to move urology patients from Gartnavel, including men, into the maternity hospital.
Ward 6AB of Gartnavel, a mixed urology ward, has been relocated to ward 70 of the maternity hospital, where new mums recover after they give birth.
The figures also show that there are less maternity beds at Glasgow's new hospital than the old Southern General.
In January there were 72 beds at the Southern compared with 57 at the new hospital.
Gillian Smith, of the Royal College of Midwives in Scotland, said she would be concerned if any mother was discharged at 2am who hadn't chosen to go home at that time.
She added: "We have to ensure that post-natal services in the community are adequate and we are not discharging women who have clinical care requirements or who require support.
"I would encourage any members of staff who believes a women isn't ready to go home to challenge it."
A spokeswoman for NHSGGC said: "Approximately five years ago it was agreed, in consultation with staff and partner organisations, that the number of beds across maternity services in Glasgow would reduce. Bed occupancy was low at the time and patient length of stay was higher than average.
"A phased reduction in bed numbers was put in place and processes implemented to support timely discharge for women who were suitable and who wished to go home earlier.
"The reduction in bed numbers was achieved around 18 months ago and our new bed modelling is flexible to allow additional bed capacity to be opened at times of peak demand.
"Staffing however, has not reduced in line with the bed reductions as the overall activity remains unchanged."
MIDWIVES contacted the Evening Times to share their experiences of working with reduced bed numbers including one from the Princes Royal Maternity hospital.
She said: "Staff are under extreme stress and pressure to get patients out ASAP even though they feel they could do with another day in. Management are on their our case to vacate the beds.
"Only a few months ago a mum and baby got to go home at 2am in the morning.
"Many times, patients and partners are sitting in the patients dining room as there are no beds ready for them.
"Staff are run into the ground. Staff on a 12-hour sometimes do not get any breaks. Morale is very low.
"Management see all these issues on a daily basis but do nothing to help their staff.
Share article
"Urology mixed ward should not be in a maternity hospital. Mothers in labour are now moved to the 6th floor which is even further from the labour ward, putting patients at risk.
"Staff can't speak out about these issues, only hope that someone can step in and get this sorted before something goes wrong." Friend Link:New Beats Studio,

Last year they unveiled a Roll of Honour on the Friends of Glasgow Necropolis website, with the names of the 154 men and one woman buried in the Victorian cemetery who died in the First World War.
Since then they have been contacted by people with more stories to tell.
"A lot of families have got in touch and it turns out some are from the local area," explains Ruth Johnston, chairman of the group.
"It is really interesting to see they were quite close by to each other."
Living in Dennistoun, an area just across the eastern walls of the Necropolis, Ruth has a particular interest in the history of her local area.
"In Dennistoun addresses keep coming up, in Roselea Drive and Onslow Drive, for example. I wonder if they knew each other from school?", she asks.
One of those 17 soldiers from Dennistoun soldiers was James Hunter Lawrie who was killed in action in 1916, aged 20.
He lived in Onslaw Drive in 1915 when he was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers.

Nine months later he landed in France and joined the 7th/8th Battalion 46th Brigade, 15th (Scottish Division). Most of his short time with the battalion was spent in trench work near Hulluch village before heading to the Somme on July 21.
The battalion took over trenches on August 7 and two days later James, and several other men, were killed by a shell.
Another soldier was Private George Cunningham who was killed in action in 1916 at the age of 18.
After trawling through records, research has revealed that he lived at two different addresses in Roselea Drive, Dennistoun, as a child.
It is likely that George landed in France in 1916 and he may have been part of large-scale drafts to boost the numbers of the 100th Brigade, 33rd Division of the Highland Light Infantry in the run up to the ill-fated Battle of the Somme.
In July that year, just two months before George died, the battalion was involved in an attempt to capture High Wood, an action at the Somme, and sustained heavy casualties.
Friends of Glasgow Necropolis was set up 10 years ago by a group of like-minded enthusiasts interested in conserving the sculpture and architecture of the cemetery, next to Glasgow Cathedral, as well as its biodiversity and natural history.
Ruth has been a part of it since the second meeting.
"Over the years we have been involved in a lot of work. The wonderful Cathedral Precinct gates were restored in gold leaf and black, for example," she says.
"That was after a donation of £14,000 by one of the relatives of the company that made them originally.
"We have restored a lot of the stonework on graves and monuments and have a good partnership with the council and also make applications to Historic Scotland and other funding bodies."
The most high-profile work carried out by the group is the guided tours of the Necropolis. It might be better known as the final resting place of the great and the good, families who had a high profile in the business world, from the Templetons, of the carpet factory, to publishers Blackie and Collins, but also postmen, fireman, poets and artists.
The group is looking for more volunteers to take out tour groups or get involved in the ongoing research project to profile the dead of the First World War who are interred on the 37-acre site.
"The more tours we can do the more donations we get," says Ruth. "At the moment most of our volunteers work, and some are retired. I'm self employed so I am flexible. We cover as much as we can.
"We also have students from Torun University in Poland working with us recording the 3500 stones. We need people to convert the material the students are collecting into spreadsheets that can go on the website."
It was the local connection that drove Ruth to get involved.
"Where else would you want to walk around? It's such an inspiring place. As opposed to medieval graveyards that were all about death and hell, the Victorians felt theirs should be uplifting, not just in the architecture but the stories that are here too."
Glasgow City Council took over ownership of the Necropolis in the 1960s after it was originally set up in the 17th century by the Merchants' House, based on the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
Volunteers have now recorded profiles, available to view online, of 75 of the 155 buried at the Necropolis who served in the First World War, with more to be added.
Of those 155, 137 were from the Army, nine were in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and two were merchant seamen.
Eliza Margaret Nisbet is the only woman, a volunteer with the Scottish Churches Huts that was later called Huts and Canteens for the Armed Forces.
She attended Hillhead Church and died at Etaples, France, on August 16, 1916.

Now, every Remembrance Sunday the group will lay poppies on those 155 graves. A map is available for visitors to trace the heritage of the First World War in the cemetery, with graves marked.

When police arrived at the scene, the found his seriously injured pal lying near the water.
Detectives, who are investigating whether a third person was involved, believe the injured man may hold vital clues about the murder.
A senior police source said: "At the moment we just don't know what went on.
"But, we can't work on the assumption that the only these two men were involved."

Alison Thewliss, Glasgow Central SNP MP, asked ministers about rising levels of poverty and links to benefit sanctions.
During the last Scottish questions and Prime Minister Questions before the Commons summer recess David Cameron and his ministers came under fire for the measures announced in the Budget last week.
The Tories however said their measures were working and insisted low paid workers will be better off.
Priti Patel, UK Employment Minister ignored the call and said getting people into jobs was the Conservative’s priority.
She said: "Work is the best route out of poverty and this government is taking action.â€
Ms Thewliss said the action needed was on why people need to go to food banks.
She asked if the government would call an "urgent review into the 323% increase in requests for food parcels.â€
Ms Patel repeated the best way out of poverty was through having a job. She told Ms Thewliss:â€You need to get with the economic plan.â€
Labour also joined in the attack on the Tories over welfare reform and poverty.

Shadow Scottish Secretary Ian Murray, Labour MP also challenged the minister on benefit sanctions.
He said he had been told by Citizens Advice Scotland there was "200 people a day being sanctioned†and he called for a review of the sanctions regime.
Ms Patel also ignored his calls and said the system of reducing or stopping people’s benefit if they don’t meet strict job seeking criteria was effective.
She said: 70% of people say conditionality (sanctions regime) helps with getting into employment.â€
Mr Murray said the budget was pushing more people into poverty leaving people financially worse off and called for the UK Government to be "given the power to make the welfare state fit for the Scottish people.â€
Labour interim leader Harriet Harman also challenged the Government on the budget changes and claims people on low pay would be better off.
She told the Prime Minister the increase to the minimum wage and renamed the national living wage would not compensate for tax credit cuts.

She told him the Institute of Fiscal Studies said people would be more than £1000 a year worse off.
Mr Cameron disputed the analysis and said: "A couple, both working on the minimum wage would be better off in 2020 by £5500. Friend Link:New Beats Studio

Developers hope the council will approve plans for a nine storey multi-million pound project on Renfield Street.
Work on the site between The Citizen M Hotel and The Evening Times office and across from the Pavilion theatre will start pending the council’s planning decision which is expected in September.
Broadway Two is led by London based developers Titan Investors who purchased the site in 2014 and have a track record of delivering office spaces across Scotland.
Glasgow based architects, Cooper Cromar, have designed the building having already provided plans for the project’s sister building, Broadway One.
The site is set to have 180,000 sq ft capacity and offer Grade A office accommodation.
The new office will complete the Broadway project, with Broadway One currently housing Tesco bank in an adjacent building.
Plans include space for a restaurant on the ground floor and open modern interiors.
The building is available to rent as a whole or in individual units – as yet none have been leased.

Glasgow’s Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the news of the new development and hopes the building will help attract more world class business names to the city and boost office capacity.
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce deputy chief executive Richard Muir said: "This is good news for the city centre. Even with a number of projects currently under construction, there is still a shortage of Grade A office space. "This will help the city continue to attract inward investment and grow its well-deserved reputation as great place to work, live and visit.â€
The Broadway Two proposal comes at a time when Glasgow city centre is greatly increasing its office space capacity to match demand for quality offices.
Developers BAM and Taylor Clarke received planning approval for the £70 million, 280,000 sq ft Atlantic Square project on Argyle Street last year as the city races to keep up with demand. FriendLink:Beats By Dre Headphones Sale
